Siemens Energy stays on the road to success in North America: further major wind power order from Canada

Siemens Energy has been awarded a follow-up order for 72 of its 2.3 megawatts (MW) wind turbines, equipped with 101 meter rotors, for the Comber Wind Limited Partnership Project in Essex County, Ontario. The purchaser is Brookfield Renewable Power Inc., a leading producer and developer of renewable energy for which Siemens has already supplied wind turbines for the Gosfield project in Ontario. Once completed in September 2011, the 166-MW wind power plant is expected to provide clean power for approximately 55,000 homes.

The scope for the Comber wind energy project includes supply and commissioning of the wind turbines, as well as a service, maintenance and warranty agreement. Delivery of the wind turbines will begin in May 2011. This project is the second order that Siemens has received for wind turbines from Brookfield Renewable Power.

“The SWT-2.3-101 is our best selling wind turbine worldwide. The order from Brookfield Renewable Power reaffirms this. We have already sold more than 3,000 of the 2.3 MW turbines. Our clients know that they get both high quality and reliability from a partner whom they can trust. At the same time, this follow-up order helps us to strengthen our leading position on the Canadian wind power market,” stated Jens-Peter Saul, CEO of the Siemens Wind Power Business Unit.

This order follows a recently announced major wind turbine agreement with Samsung C&T Corporation and Pattern Energy for the supply of wind turbines with a total capacity of up to 600 MW in southern Ontario.

“The Comber Wind Project will be our third wind farm in Ontario and we are pleased to be using Siemens turbines for a second time. We look forward to working with the Siemens organization again in adding more clean, renewable energy for Ontario,” said Richard Legault, President and Chief Executive Officer, Brookfield Renewable Power Inc.

Siemens and Brookfield Renewable Power first partnered on the Gosfield Wind project located in the Town of Kingsville, Essex County, Ontario, in 2009. The 50-MW Gosfield Wind power plant consists of 22 SWT-2.3-101 turbines and has been operational since September 2010.

Wind power is part of Siemens’ Environmental Portfolio. In fiscal 2009, revenue from the Portfolio totaled approximately EUR23 billion, making Siemens the world’s largest supplier of environmentally friendly technologies. In the same period, the company’s products and solutions enabled customers to reduce their CO2 emissions by 210 million tons. This amount equals the combined annual CO2 emissions of New York, Tokyo, London and Berlin.
