China - Chinese partner orders $70M in wind power parts from AMSC

Largest initial electrical control system order that AMSC has won to date from any wind turbine customer

Power systems components maker American Superconductor Corp. has won a $70 million initial order from China’s Shenyang Blower Works (Group) Co. Ltd. for full wind turbine electrical control systems, to be used in wind turbines that were co-developed with its subsidiary AMSC Windtec.

According to officials at Devens-based AMSC, the $70 million order from SBW is the largest initial electrical control system order that AMSC has won to date from any wind turbine customer. The Chinese company will use the electrical control systems in the 2-megawatt wind turbines it developed with AMSC Windtec. The first of those turbines are to be erected in March, and AMSC says it will start shipping the control systems in the second half of the year.

Late last month, AMSC received an order from power equipment manufacturer XJ Group Corp. of China for 100 sets of wind turbine electrical components to be used in 2-megawatt doubly-fed induction wind turbines co-developed with AMSC subsidiary AMSC Windtec.

AMSC announced earlier in January that it had signed a contract with Dongfang Turbine Co. Ltd. to design and co-develop 5-megawatt offshore wind turbines. Reporting approximately 520 employees, AMSC posted a profit of $4.34 million for the quarter ending Sept. 30, 2009, on revenue of $74.7 million, a significant jump from the previous year’s quarter which saw revenue of $40.4 million and a loss of $4.1 million.
