Second Wind Achieves Fifth Consecutive Ranking on Inc.
NEW YORK and BOSTON, August 31, 2011 - Wind information technology innovator Second Wind announced today that it has achieved a fifth consecutive ranking on the exclusive Inc. 5000 list, recognizing the company's economic leadership. With three-year sales growth topping 100% from 2007-2010, Second Wind placed #2344 on the list -- a jump of nearly 400 places. The company joins other household names like Dunkin Donuts, Spirit Airlines, and television maker Vizio on this year's list. Over the past three years Second Wind has been a driver of economic growth in its home state of Massachusetts, more than doubling the size of its workforce and increasing technology exports to China, India, Southeast Asia, western and eastern Europe, and Australia. Published annually by Inc. Magazine, the Inc. 5000 list profiles a vital part of the U.S. economy - independent entrepreneurial companies.
"During 2010, Second Wind built on our 30-year record of innovation in the wind industry. Our flagship wind measurement system, the Triton® Sonic Wind Profiler, grew its market-leading position, oubling the number of installed units and tripling the number of hours of global wind data logged. We also continued to develop competitive offerings in the area of traditional wind measurement technology, most notably the ProMast™ 60 meteorological tower system. We introduced WindIQ™, an innovative approach to guide our customers to increase their use of wind information across the prospecting, development and operational phases of the wind farm lifecycle. And we proved for the fifth year in a row that clean technology is a driver of economic growth," said Second Wind CEO Larry Letteney.
Second Wind's customers represent the largest global wind developers and operators as well as medium-sized and community wind companies who seek to gain competitive economic advantage through the use of the company's advanced products and services. The company's impressive advances over the past several years are fueled by the invention and overwhelming adoption of the Triton Sonic Wind Profiler and SkyServe Remote Wind Data Service. Second Wind's Triton is an advanced remote sensing system that uses sodar (sonic detection and ranging) technology to measure wind in the areas that most affect a wind turbine’s performance. By measuring wind speeds at the turbine rotor's hub height nd beyond, Triton reduces uncertainty in annual energy production (AEP) forecasts. Easy to install and with autonomous operation, Tritons are being used throughout the wind industry, alone or in conjunction with met towers, to streamline the wind farm development process and to improve wind farm operations.
In a stagnant economic environment, median growth rate of 2011 Inc. 500|5000 companies remains an impressive 94 percent. The companies on this year's list report having created 350,000 jobs in the past three years, and aggregate revenue among the honorees reached $366 billion, up 14 percent from last year. Complete results of the Inc. 5000, including company profiles and an interactive database that can be sorted by industry, region, and other criteria, can be found at www.inc.com/5000.
"Now, more than ever, we depend on Inc. 500/5000 companies to spur innovation, provide jobs, and drive the economy forward. Growth companies, not large corporations, are where the action is,” says Inc. magazine Editor Jane Berentson.
