Germany - Siemens delivers 80 wind turbines for the DanTysk offshore wind power plant near Sylt

Large-scale German wind farm project sets a milestone in the commercial use of offshore wind energy

Siemens Energy has been awarded a contract to deliver 80 wind turbines of the SWT-3.6-120 type for the DanTysk offshore wind power plant located in the North Sea.

The customer is the DanTysk Offshore Wind GmbH in which Vattenfall Europe and the Stadtwerke München have a 51- and 49-percent stake respectively.

Vattenfall will built and operate the wind farm. Installation of the wind turbines is scheduled to begin in 2012. Once the wind power plant is commissioned in the winter of 2013-2014, DanTysk will use its total capacity of 288 megawatts to supply up to 500,000 German households with clean electricity. For Siemens, this is already the fourth order for a commercial offshore wind energy plant in German waters.

The DanTysk wind power plant will be constructed about 70 km west of the island of Sylt, near the maritime boundary with Denmark. For the DanTysk project, Siemens is responsible for the installation and commissioning of the 80 wind turbines over a surface area of 70 square kilometers and in depths up to 30 meters. Each turbine has an output of 3.6 MW and a rotor diameter of 120 meters. In addition, Siemens signed a service, maintenance, and warranty agreement for the units.

“This order confirms that Siemens is not only No. 1 in the world in the offshore business, but has also taken over the lead in Germany,” said Jens-Peter Saul, CEO of Siemens’ Wind Power Business Unit. “In the last 19 years, Siemens has placed more than 500 wind turbines in the water that are all running reliably and successfully. We are thus making a substantial contribution to the establishment of a sustainable energy supply in Germany and around the world,” Saul added.

DanTysk is already the second contract involving the construction of an offshore wind power plant that Siemens has received from Vattenfall. Vattenfall has been operating the Lillgrund wind power plant since 2007. Located in the Baltic Sea off the Swedish coast, it has a total installed capacity of 110 MW. In June of 2010, Siemens, the Stadtwerke München and RWE Innogy created a joint venture to build the Gwynt y Môr (Welsh for “wind on the sea”) offshore wind power plant. With an installed capacity of 576 MW, Gwynt y Môr will be built in Liverpool Bay about 18 km off the coast of North Wales.

Wind turbines are part of Siemens’ Environmental Portfolio. In fiscal 2009, revenue from the Portfolio totaled about EUR23 billion, making Siemens the world’s largest supplier of ecofriendly technologies. In the same period, the company’s products and solutions enabled customers to reduce their CO2 emissions by 210 million tons. This amount equals the combined annual CO2 emissions of New York, Tokyo, London and Berlin.
