Indian state-owned National Fertilizers on Friday said it will invest Rs 72 crore (US$15.6 million) to develop a 14.7-MW wind power project in Rajasthan for commercial use.

"We have awarded the project to Suzlon Energy to execute the wind farm for a cost of Rs 72 crore. This will be completed by the end of September," National Fertilizers chairman and managing director V K Sharma said.

National Fertilizers, a Mini-Ratna company, was the second largest producer of nitrogenous fertilisers in the country with a 16.8 per cent share of domestic urea production during 2008-09.

Pune-based Suzlon Energy is the world's third largest wind turbines supplier and has operations across the Americas, Asia, Australia and Europe.

National Fertilizers, which has two manufacturing plants in Punjab and one each in Madhya Pradesh and Haryana, plans to connect the wind power project with the national grid for commercial purposes.

"The entry into the wind energy segment is a part of our effort to contribute to the clean environment," Sharma said.

Sharma said the company intends to jack-up wind power generation capacity further in the years to come, but no definite target has been fixed, as of now.
