USA - Rhode Island moves towards offshore wind energy
Rhode Island is nearing completion of a three-year study of potential off-shore wind farm effects, including possible effects on bird migration, wildlife, habitat, fish, the fishing industry, and areas that are important to Indian tribes. Eight million dollars has been spent on the research. Other states interested in wind resources include Massachusetts, Delaware, Maine, New Jersey, New York and Virginia. Some want to secure permits for wind farms and lease blocks of federally controlled waters. Many see wind energy as crucial toward reducing carbon emissions scientists believe are responsible for global warming and in moving the United States toward a more sustainable future. Critics say offshore wind farms could hurt wildlife.
