Chile - Codelco announces tender for the construction of the largest wind farm in Latin America in August

Codelco, -the world’s largest cooper producer-, has announced a tender for the construction of the wind farm Calama, which will be located in northern Chile and, with an investment of about U 700 million, will be the largest wind farm in Latin America.

This wind farm will be spread over 4,000 hectares and will consist of 125 turbines of 2.3 MW, having a rated capacity of 250 MW. The tender will remain open until the end of the year and it is estimated that the work will be completed in three years.

The wind farm, which will generate approximately 358 jobs during the construction phase and eight in its operation, is located in the town of Calama, El Loa Province (Region II), at 1534 km north of Santiago. Once completed, the farm will provide electricity to the Interconnected System of Norte Grande, which caters to the Codelco Norte Division, composed of large deposits as Redomiro Tomic and Chuquicamata.

The initiative reflects the Government's strategy to expand the energy matrix with the incorporation of renewable energy, while the use of clean energy in the production of copper is a growing demand in international markets.
