Siemens receives first wind power order from Turkey

Siemens has received a turnkey order for the supply of 13 of the new SWT-2.3-101 wind turbines from EnerjiSA Power Generating Company. The machines will be installed in the Çanakkale-Mahmudiye wind farm in the North Western part of Turkey. The contract covers the delivery, installation, commis- sioning of the turbines and part of the civil works. Furthermore, a 12 year service and maintenance contract has been signed. The installation of the wind turbines is scheduled to be finalized in 2010.

“The Turkish wind power market will grow significantly in the years to come and the contract with EnerjiSA Power marks Siemens’ entry into this exciting market,” said Andreas Nauen, CEO of the Siemens Wind Power Business Unit. “It is also the first large order of our new SWT-2.3-101 wind turbine, which is ideally suited for sites with low to medium wind speeds. Furthermore, the order combines Siemens’ reliable wind turbines with the grid connection equipment into a turnkey contract. The long-term service contract will provide EnerjiSA Power with the maximum security for his invest- ment and ensure that the wind turbines are optimally serviced and maintained throughout their life- time.”

The Çanakkale-Mahmudiye wind farm will be built at a medium wind speed site and is therefore the perfect fit for the SWT-2.3-101 wind turbine. The new machine is designed to produce more power with less wind and will therefore be a valuable asset for energy providers looking for greater returns from low to medium wind speed sites. With a diameter of 101 meters, the rotor of the new SWT-2.3-101 has a swept area of 8,000 square meters, which equates to one-and-a-half football fields.

Selahattin Hakman, Group President of Sabancı Holding Energy, stated that the share of renewable energy would represent 10 percent of EnerjiSA's portfolio. The company is aiming to become a leader with an installed capacity of 5000 MW in 2015. Hakman emphasized that renewable energy sources con- tribute toward energy sustainability, environmental protection and electricity supply security. He added: "EnerjiSA Çanakkale wind farm will constitute our first step to this effect. With our wind farm, which will start operating in 2010, we will contribute with our environmental friendly approach by reducing annual carbon dioxide emissions by 50 thousand metric tons.”

Wind power is an important feature of Siemens environmental portfolio. In 2008, revenue from the products and solutions of Siemens environmental portfolio was nearly EUR 19 billion, which is equivalent to around a quarter of Siemens total revenue.
