Nigeria - Wind System Limited to install wind turbines in the state of Ogun

It may no longer be news that the challenges of power had hampered the growth and development of Nigeria in all facets of life. Currently, it is evident that the Power Holding Company of Nigeria (PHCN), cannot meet Nigeria’s electric power needs. The company generates a paltry 4,000 MW, a far cry from what 140 million Nigerians need. Power has become the primary constraint to economic development, job creation, international competitiveness, quality health care, potable water provision, e.t.c.

As the situation continues to worsen, the Ogun State government has decided not to fold its arms but to intervene to find a lasting solution to these problems. Definitely, the move by Ogun State to implement solutions around critical power-starved infrastructure will be heralded as a model for other nations. Water is a basic societal need but its delivery is hampered primarily by the lack of adequate and reliable electricity to power water treatment and delivery plants. Power is the key barrier to a reliable and potable water supply to residents of Ogun State.

Ogun State government, in its renewed efforts to provide alternative source of power in collaboration with Wind System Limited — a global international firm with its headquarters in the United States of America which specialises in renewable energy installation — will soon commence the construction of wind energy power system for some selected water pumping -stations in the state.

Continuous dependence on non- renewable sources of power like coal, uranium, oil and gas is not sustainable, hence the need to pursue vigorously the development of alternative fuels from locally available energy sources.

According to Prof. Soji Adelaja, chairman of Wind System Limited, wind is a home grown energy source, which is in-exhaustible and infinitely renewable. The cost implications are minimal and it serves no threats to the environment. Wind, according to him, is also the cheapest renewable resource for electricity.

This move, to a very large extent, is commendable.Getting alternative power source may not be the real thing but getting one that will be cost effective and efficient. The visit by officials of both the Ogun State Water Corporation and Wind System Limited to the selected 16 government facilities in the state has started yielding the expected fruits. The team examined the state of equipment, power need, suitability for wind and other factors at each location.


The power project which will be in two phases will be located in Omu, Tai Solarin University, Yemoji, Oni, Apoje,Ogere and Olabisi Onabanjo University, Ago Iwoye.
Other locations include: Sagamu, Imeko, University of Agriculture, Ayetoro, Oke Odan, Ibara and Adatan Booster Stations, Gateway Television Complex, Olusegun Obasanjo Hilltop and the Presidential Hilltop.


Aside the fact that the project will create employment for Ogun State indigenes, it will also place the state at the forefront of alternative energy in Nigeria.
