Measuring Up Since 1964

The story of Labkotec Oy, a designer and manufacturer of measurement solutions for industrial applications, demonstrates that sustainable values lead to lasting results. The Finnish company, which has worked for decades for a cleaner environment, has grown into an international partner trusted by both industries and the public sector. 

1964, environmental protection was in its infancy, with minimal legislation and limited ecological awareness. Fortunately, a few pioneers were able to see further. One of them was Aate A. Virtanen, founder of Oy Labko Ab, serial entrepreneur and Commercial Counselor, whose numerous inventions paved the way for modern environmental protection technologies. 

“Responsibility has been at the core of our operations from the beginning, whether it’s about data-driven decision-making, preventing environmental damage, or improving safety and efficiency,” tells Kari Kananen, Senior Advisor at Labkotec Oy. 

From salmon farming to global technology markets 

Labko’s first businesses included, for example, building salmon boats and farming fish. However, Virtanen’s thoughts soon turned to technology, as reflected in the company’s name—”Labko” originates from the words “Laboratorio Kojeet (Laboratory Equipment)”.  

Labko’s breakthrough came with a level measurement device developed from the grain moisture meter, marking the beginning of the company’s journey as a developer and manufacturer of environmental protection equipment and systems. Next, the product range expanded to include reinforced plastic tanks and separators. Labko obtained over 20 patents and design protections for products and ideas that advanced environmental protection in Finland and abroad. 

“Separating oily rainwater was a significant environmental achievement of its time. The oil separator alarms launched in the early 1970s remain a key product group for us,” Kananen notes. 

The second milestone in product development was the wing ice detection technology for aircraft, which was developed in the early 90s and led to projects with Finnair and McDonnell Douglas. A few years later, Boeing adopted the technology. However, a new market quickly emerged. The construction of the first wind turbines in Denmark and Germany highlighted the safety risks associated with icing. 

“We adapted the ice detection technology from aircraft wings to wind turbine blades. Our technology makes wind power production more efficient and ensures safe movement in the area. Today, the customers include Europe’s largest wind turbine manufacturers,” Kananen says.

The third significant product development step, according to Kananen, was the LabkoNet remote monitoring system launch in 1998. The cloud service allows users to quickly and easily view the status of their site, including tank fill levels, alarms, and measurement values, presented as graphical data for a desired period. 

“LabkoNet helps our customers benefit from their measurement data. The system ensures and enhances environmental safety and monitors and optimizes processes and operations in industries such as manufacturing and logistics,” Kananen explains. 

Today, Labkotec’s range includes 13 product groups. The measurement and monitoring solutions serve industries, wind power, water management, gas stations, raw material storage, pumping stations, airports, and weather stations worldwide. Labkotec’s products carry the Finnish Key Flag symbol and ISO certifications for quality and environmental management. Products for hazardous areas comply with ATEX, IECEx, and UKEX requirements. 

“We manufacture durable, long-lasting products and ensure the entire production chain is responsible,” Kananen emphasizes. 

From high-quality products to customer-focused services 

Labkotec understands that meeting customer needs is just as important as product quality. Combining customer focus with technological expertise has strengthened Labkotec’s position as a trusted partner across borders. 

“Our main market is Europe. We expect the market to expand as awareness grows and regulations increase. Even now, we sell as far away as Australia,” says Janne Uusinoka, CEO of Labkotec Oy. 

In addition to reliable technology, more customer value is created through services that cover device selection, installation, calibration, training, maintenance, and upgrades.

As Virtanen said, “A company is nothing—it’s the people that make it.” Careers at Labkotec are often long, with the longest spanning over 40 years, reflecting a positive work atmosphere and strong commitment. In 2002, Labkotec was awarded as the Employer of the Year. New employees quickly adapt to the company’s culture and practices. Continuous training maintains expertise and keeps work interesting.

Measuring a sustainable future together 

At 60 years old, Labkotec is a pioneer in Finnish IoT expertise and a market leader in wind turbine ice detection. Behind its extensive product range is specialized technical product development and production, as well as reliable and internationally respected manufacturers. Over half of the company’s production is exported. Labkotec’s offices are in Pirkkala, Vantaa, and Pori, Finland, while the Labkotec Group includes the subsidiary Labkotec GmbH in Germany and a sales office in Stockholm. In 2023, Labkotec’s turnover was approximately €11 million, with 42 employees. 

Labkotec’s future direction is guided by the values that have brought it success thus far.
