Canada - 2nd wind development in Pictou and Antigonish counties

Nova Scotia Power today announced it has signed a power purchase agreement with Shear Wind Inc. for a 60-megawatt wind farm in Pictou and Antigonish Counties . The location straddles county lines in the Brown's Mountain Range, about 15 kilometres west of Antigonish.

“This project is part of Nova Scotia Power's commitment to cleaner and greener power generation,” said Ralph Tedesco, President and CEO of Nova Scotia Power. “It's part of our strategy to supply more clean, renewable energy for Nova Scotians. These partnerships will also help control future energy costs in our province.”

Thirty wind turbines will be erected, providing enough electricity for about 17,500 homes.

“This project would not be possible without the support of the local landowners and community,” said Mike Magnus, President and CEO of Shear Wind Inc. “It is because of their involvement, their sense of ownership and support of the Northumberland Community Economic Development Investment Fund, that we have reached this stage today. We're pleased to be supplying energy for Nova Scotians.”

The project is the result of a Request for Proposals from Nova Scotia Power for more energy from renewable sources. So far, Nova Scotia Power has announced new Power Purchase Agreements for a total of 184 megawatts of wind generation. In all, Nova Scotia Power expects to sign contracts totalling 240 megawatts.
