USA - American Superconductor lands two new orders for its wind turbine electrical

American Superconductor Corp., through its Windtec subsidiary, has landed two new orders for its wind turbine electrical systems from three existing customers in Canada and China.

AMSC executives said that in China, CSR Zhuzhou Electric Locomotive Research Institute (ZELRI), which ordered 20 turbines in January, ordered 20 additional sets of core components for 1.65 megawatts of wind turbines. Also in China, Dongfang Steam Turbine Works placed its first order for the electrical systems for Windetc's 2.5 megawatt turbine design.

Meanwhile in Canada, AAER Inc. ordered electrical components for 20, 1.5 megawatt turbines. AAER reports plans to manufacture, sell and commission turbines in Canada, the United States, Mexico, France, and the United Kingdom.

Financial terms of the orders were not disclosed. With the new orders, Windtec reports the total amount of wind power supported by publicly traded AMSC (Nasdaq: AMSC) products has reached 6.6 gigawatts, and AMSC expects 65 percent of its fiscal revenue for 2007 (ending March 31, 2008) to come from the wind industry.

AMSC received multimillion-dollar up front licensing fees from both customers, and is set to receive royalties on each system installed. Licensing details of the deals were not released.

AMSC reported a $35 million loss on $52 million in revenue for 2007.
