Analysis: India needs more renewable energy tenders

Variable renewable energy tenders issued annually in India have fallen from 40 GW in 2019 to about 28 GW in 2022. That's not enough to reach the renewable energy targets of the country.

State and central agencies need to make concerted efforts to raise the annual variable renewable energy tender issuance to over 35GW in the next few years, to achieve India’s 2030 targets.

Variable renewable energy tenders issued annually in India have fallen from 40 gigawatts (GW) in 2019 to about 28GW in 2022. This is below the level required for India to achieve its target of 450GW of installed renewable energy capacity by 2030, finds a new joint report from the Institute for Energy Economics and Financial Analysis (IEEFA) and JMK Research & Analytics. “Currently, renewable energy tendering activity is off-track.
