Norway resumes onshore wind planning

Norway will resume its permitting process for onshore wind farms, but will limit it to municipalities willing to erect the turbines, Norway's energy minister said Friday, according to Reuters.

The approval process for new wind turbines was suspended in 2019 after repeated protests against the construction of wind turbines on previously untouched land.

"We are today sending a letter today to NVE (regulator), asking them to re-open the licensing process for onshore wind farms," Norwegian Minister of Petroleum and Energy Terje Aasland said.

Norway gets most of its electricity from hydropower, but with demand rising from the transport and industrial sectors, electricity demand is set to increase in the coming years to the point where further capacity will be tapped.
