BWEA welcomes prime minister’s pledge to ‘increase renewable energy sources’
Responding to Gordon Brown’s speech on climate change today, Adam Bruce, chairman of BWEA said:
‘There is a political consensus on the need for the UK to have significantly more renewable energy, but Gordon Brown’s speech today shows clearly that government is determined to get beyond “gimmickry” and transform the concept a ‘green energy Britain’ from rhetoric to being a realisable goal.
His pledge to tackle the obstacles that have held back the development of UK renewable energy is a necessary step forward in helping Britain avoid dependency on carbon-generating gas imports from former Soviet republics to fill the ‘energy gap’ created when the UK’s elderly coal and nuclear power stations retire over the next few years. We look forward to working closely with Government departments to overcome the remaining barriers to development and deliver a significant UK contribution to the EU’s 20% renewable energy target.”
