Conference Announcement

Conference "Hamburg Offshore Wind" on September 6 in Hamburg

Offshore Wind Farm development will be in the focus of attention of more than 150 wind energy experts at the conference "Hamburg Offshore Wind" in September. The opening session "The Real Life" deals with experience gained from the operation and installation of Q7, Beatrice, Horns Rev and FINO. During the second block "The Connection" an expert panel is discussing the challenges of grid connection. The third block called "The Basics" highlights the latest national and international standards, which are being published or due publishing. The final session will outline "The Future", such as actual progress on the German offshore demonstrator, and engineering tools as well as methods leading to optimised solutions.

"Experience from four years operation of research platform FINO 1", 10:45 a.m.

In the first block "The Real Life - Experiences and Field Reports" Gundula Fischer, Peter Dalhoff and Detlef Kindler from Germanischer Lloyd will report on the comprehensive experience of operating the platform, which is located in the North Sea since 2003. The task is to investigate the offshore surroundings especially with regard to wind and wave conditions. The results, including measurement outcomes and year-round access to the platform, yield important lessons learnt from planning to operation. The world's first offshore research platform covering investigations of a very broad extent is located close to the German test field for offshore wind turbines. The platform is operated by Germanischer Lloyd on behalf of the German Federal Environmental Ministry (BMU).

"Tools for estimating operation and maintenance costs of offshore wind farms", 3:30 p.m.

An outlook on what operators will have to count on when it comes to costs is given by Luc Rademakers and Henk Braam from ECN Wind Energy with Peter Frohböse and Niels Kruse from Germanischer Lloyd. Operation and maintenance (O&M) are a significant factor in the energy generation costs. In a long term research project, ECN Wind Energy explores the possibilities of lowering these expenses. The presenters introduce the development of models, software and their validation to quantify and optimise O&M aspects already in the planning phase and in the early operational phase of wind farms.

The 6th Hamburg Offshore Wind Conference on 6 September 2007 invites developers, turbine and foundation manufacturers, engineering consultants, insurance companies, universities and governmental institutions to discuss current technical challenges of offshore wind farms. The conference will be held in English and is hosted by Germanischer Lloyd.

Journalists are invited to participate at no expense.
