Wind Industry Profile of

Matafongo Wind Farm in the Dominican Republic Changes Hands

InterEnergy Group has bought the 34MW Matafongo wind farm in the southwest of the Dominican Republic, as well as a pipeline of other projects.

The investment for the projects in partnership with Grupo Popular exceeds $52,000,000 and shows a clear commitment to clean energy generation in the Dominican Republic. The Matafongo onshore wind farm has an installed capacity of 34MW, which can be expanded to 50MW, and generates approximately 104 GWh each year. The project is estimated to reduce CO2 emissions by an average of 30,000 tonnes of CO2 per year.

InterEnergy Group is an energy solutions provider with presence in the Dominican Republic, Panama, Jamaica and Chile, and has also acquired several assets currently under development as part of this purchase: a 40MW photovoltaic solar project and two other 50MW wind farms in the north of the country.

“As InterEnergy Group, we have a strong commitment towards guaranteeing our clients the availability of 100% renewable energy, contributing to the Sustainable Development Goals(SDGs). Such commitment was expressly made at the Clinton Global Initiative meetings in New York in 2005 and Rio de Janeiro in 2013. In 2015 the company launched the SER Initiative in Panama where in the company provides large clients with guaranteed 100% renewable energy, (wind, solar and hydro)”, explains Rolando González Bunster, president of InterEnergy Group.

As a result of this commitment, InterEnergy built the first wind farm in the Dominican Republic nine years ago (Quilvio Cabrera and Juancho Los Cocos). In 2015, InterEnergy built the largest wind farm in Central America and the Caribbean, called Laudato Si, in Penonomé, Panama, with an installed capacity of 215MW.

The Group plans to further increase its investments in the region by acquiring and developing 860MW of additional renewable generation capacity in Colombia, Panama, the Dominican Republic, Uruguay, Mexico and Peru.
