A robust wind and solar industry – at the core of the European Green Deal
On 25 June WindEurope and SolarPower Europe joined forces for EU Sustainable Energy Week to host a panel discussion on the need for a coherent industrial strategy for renewables.
The session opened with a scene-setting presentation from WindEurope CEO Giles Dickson. Wind is already 15% of the EU’s electricity mix and is a well-established, homegrown industry. According to European Commission scenarios wind and solar will be 80% of the EU’s power by 2050. And electricity will be 50% of the EU’s overall energy mix. But challenges remain: delivering adequate market scale; securing financing for both projects and manufacturing; facilitating open trade; and supporting research innovation leading to commercialisation by European operators.
