Wind Industry Profile of
Green Power for Frankfurt Airport
A large part of Fraport AG's power requirements at Frankfurt Airport In Germany is to come from wind energy in the future. This is what the airport operator Fraport is planning - and thus continues to consistently implement its climate protection goals. The company wants to reach an agreement with an operator of an offshore wind farm to purchase a minimum annual quantity of green electricity from 2025 at the latest.
"Even in the current very difficult situation, we are keeping a close eye on the challenge of climate protection. From this wind energy project alone, we plan to obtain around 85 percent of our electricity requirements at Frankfurt Airport from renewable sources from 2025 onwards," emphasizes CEO Dr. Stefan Schulte. Within the framework of a Power Purchase Agreement (PPA), Fraport intends to purchase a supply volume of up to 350 gigawatt hours of green electricity per year. "We want to promote renewable energies and are looking for a competent partner for this. With such a contract, we can safely plan for the future without having to get involved in project implementation ourselves," explains Schulte.
Fraport's goal remains to obtain most of the electricity needed at Frankfurt Airport from renewable energies by 2030. Further measures are also planned. For example, CO2 emissions in Frankfurt are to be significantly reduced from the current level of approximately 170,000 metric tons per year to 80,000 metric tons per year by 2030. The company plans to achieve climate neutrality by 2050.
Solar energy is also playing a role in the planning: the first large-scale photovoltaic system is currently being installed at the airport on a new cargo hall. In the future, this is to generate more than 1.5 million kilowatt hours of electricity per year. Fraport is also continuing to build a photovoltaic system on the parking garage of the new Terminal 3.
