France Wants to Use Less Nuclear Energy

France is still one of the world leaders in the use of nuclear energy, but this is about to change, according to government plans.

The French government has presented its climate protection plans for the coming years. According to these plans, the country, which currently still obtains a good 72 percent of its electricity from nuclear power, is to gradually switch to renewable energies in the next few years. By 2035, the share of nuclear power is to fall to 50 percent, while the share of renewables is to rise to 33 percent of gross final energy consumption by 2030.

By 2030, greenhouse gas emissions are also to be reduced by 40 percent compared to the 1990 level. France aims to achieve climate neutrality by 2050.

The plan is initially still available for public consultation before it can be introduced by the government by means of a legal decree.
