Successful erection of two REpower 5M in offshore test field in Cuxhaven/Germany

Hamburg, 30 November 2006. The REpower Systems AG (WKN 617703) has successfully erected two REpower 5M offshore wind turbines in the DEWI-OCC test field in Cuxhaven/Northern Germany. The first completed turbine was built for the utility EWE AG (Oldenburg/Lower Saxony), the second one for the joint venture “EWC Windpark Cuxhaven GmbH” of E.ON Energy Projects GmbH (Munich) and Essent Wind Deutschland GmbH (Duesseldorf). Both turbines have a hub height of 117 metres and a rotor diameter of 126 metres.

he nacelles with a helicopter abseil platform were manufactured in the J. Kramer shipyard in October in Bremerhaven and were shipped to Cuxhaven. Each turbine stands on five tower segments made of steel. The rotor blades, each 61.5 metres long, were transported by heavy-load trucks from Denmark to the building site; when spinning, they will cover an area of 12,469 square metres (corresponds to roughly the area of two football pitches). After the mounting of the hub on the ground, the rotor - which weighs about 120 tons - was hoisted up by a main crane and a support crane and connected with the rotor flange of the drive train in a height of 117 metres.

Jens Gösswein, Project Manager for the offshore division at REpower, is satisfied: „In spite of the partly stormy weather in this autumn we could successfully complete the construction works. Both turbines are supposed to be connected to grid and start operating in December”, and he explains: “Then, depending on the wind speeds, the rotor spins up to twelve times per minute. The location of the test field near a North Sea dyke is perfectly suited for testing the operating performance under realistic wind conditions”.

After the REpower Systems AG had already erected a prototype of the 5M in Brunsbüttel/Schleswig-Holstein in 2004, the first offshore installation of this turbine type followed in August this year off the Scottish coast in a water depth of 44 metres. In 2007, the erection of at least six further 5M turbines is planned.
