RWE to Buy all Electricity from Northwester 2
The Northwester 2 wind farm is located off the coast of Zeebrugge and is being developed by Belgian company Parkwind. 23 wind turbines with a total capacity of around 219 MW going into operation at the end of the year, will generate an average of 800 gigawatt hours of green electricity per year. Commissioning of the entire Northwester 2 wind farm is scheduled for early 2020.
RWE and Parkwind have now signed a long-term PPA (power purchase agreement). RWE intends to sell the electricity produced by the Parkwind offshore farm and the associated guarantees of origin to its large industrial and municipal customers.
"This is an attractive way to secure and manage electricity from renewable energy sources," said Andree Stracke, Chief Commercial Officer Origination & Gas Supply at RWE Supply & Trading. "The agreement underscores RWE's commitment to the Belgian energy market and our goal to expand our activities in the field of renewable energies."
