Siemens Gamesa Introduces Double-Digit Turbine

After General Electric and MHI Vestas Offshore have already announced turbines with an output in the double-digit range, the world market leader in the offshore sector is now following suit.

It was only a matter of time: Siemens Gamesa, the world's leading supplier in the offshore wind industry, has now also announced a double-digit capacity wind turbine. The SG 10.0-193 DD is the company's first offshore turbine in the 10+ MW power class. Based on the company's many years of experience, the latest wind turbine in the offshore product portfolio is based on proven technology that enables maximum energy yield in all wind classes.

“The new SG 10.0-193 DD combines experiences and knowledge from five generations of proven direct drive technology in one 10 MW turbine. A showcase of strong performance, swift time-to-market, and low risk in the offshore wind energy market,” says Markus Tacke, CEO of SGRE.

The 10 MW output is made possible by a larger generator diameter based on the well-known direct drive technology. In addition, the plant has a rotor diameter of 193 meters, resulting in up to 30 percent higher Annual Energy Production (AEP) compared to its predecessor, the SG 8.0-167 DD. The 94-meter-long rotor blades cover an area of 29,300 m2. Each blade has approximately the length of a football field.

The prototype is scheduled for installation this year and commercial launch is scheduled for 2022. The annual energy production of a single SG 10.0-193 DD is sufficient to supply around 10,000 European households with electricity. This means that an offshore wind farm of 20 of these turbines could cover the annual energy consumption of a city the size of Liverpool.

The nacelles of the new offshore wind turbine will be manufactured at the Siemens Gamesa plant in Cuxhaven, Germany, the world's largest offshore turbine manufacturing facility.
