Wind Industry Profile of
Fast, Faster, Arkona
35 kilometers northeast of the island of Rügen, the new Arkona offshore wind farm was built in recent months by developers E.ON and Equinor. The wind farm has a capacity of 385 megawatts and can therefore supply 400,000 households with renewable energy.
The construction time of just three months for 60 6-megawatt class wind turbines, including loading, weather downtimes and technical maintenance, sets a new record in the industry. "I congratulate the operators on the speedy completion of the wind farm. The excellent offshore infrastructure of the port in Mukran on the island of Rügen has made its contribution to this. The Arkona wind farm sets a benchmark for the offshore wind business in Germany and beyond," explained Christian Pegel, Minister for Energy, Infrastructure and Digitisation in Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania, the federal state where the offshore wind farm belongs to.
Holger Matthiesen, Project Director of E.ON Climate & Renewables, also thanked the companies involved in the installation: "The Arkona project partners have completed the installation of the wind turbines safely and extremely efficiently. We are proud of this record. It is the result of excellent teamwork with our partners Siemens Gamesa, A2Sea and Port Mukran".
The Arkona project has been producing renewable energy since September 2018. Full commissioning will then take place after the final construction work in the coming year.
