Facebook Speeding Up Switch to Renewables

By the end of 2020, internet giant Facebook wants to reduce its greenhouse gas emissions by 75% and operate the company's data centers worldwide with 100% renewable energy.

Facebook continues to accelerate the company's transition to renewable energy. In 2013, they signed the first PPA for wind energy. Since then, more than 3 gigawatts of new solar and wind projects have been added - over 2500 megawatts in the last 12 months alone.

The company, which recently has been criticised for data protection shortcomings, emphasises the importance of promoting local added value by switching to renewable energy in a press release. The projects create jobs, build infrastructure, open projects to other buyers and establish green electricity tariffs that allow customers to purchase renewable energy from their local utilities.

In 2015, Facebook had set a target of 50 percent of their data centers using renewable energy by 2018. This target was met a year earlier. Now new, more ambitious goals are being set.
