Wind Industry Profile of
Tender for Borssele V Wind Farm Awarded to Consortium
Borssele V has been identified as a location where technical innovations can be tested. The area is about 20 kilometres off the coast of Zeeland in the Dutch North Sea. Two 9.5 MW MHI Vestas turbines are to be installed there to supply 25,000 households with clean energy from 2021.
The use of a 'slip joint' connection between monopile and transition piece has been announced so far. This technology, developed in collaboration with Van Oord, has two major advantages: it is maintenance-free and reduces installation time, resulting in considerable cost savings.
New designs in scour protection are also being tested to reduce the impact of offshore installations on the local marine ecosystem. The aim is to create a reef system, including oyster reefs, which will allow for diversification of the North Sea environment.
