Wind turbine installed at Great Lakes Science Centre

Centre hopes to educate public about benefits of using alternative energy

A dedication ceremony took place Friday at the Great Lakes Science Center for the first wind turbine on the south shore of Lake Erie. Great Lakes is the only science center in the country to have a wind turbine in motion, NewsChannel5 reported. It will demonstrate how wind technology works and will help teach the public about the benefits of alternative energy for the region. The turbine project was made possible through collaboration with the Cleveland Foundation, Parker Hannifin and Lubrizol Corp. The turbine is expected to provide an estimated 7 percent of the science center's yearly electrical needs. Related exhibits are also being developed at the center to demonstrate how the turbine works and its benefits. The 150-foot-tall turbine needs a breeze of 8 mph to generate power, and at 31 mph achieves its peak output of 225 kilowatts.
