Vattenfall wins tender for 22 MW of battery storage in the UK
Some 70 bidders applied for the project called Enhanced Frequency Response (EFR) to ensure the stability of the British power grid. The tender was won exclusively by battery storage projects, Vattenfall was awarded the contract for 22 MW.
The Swedish energy group will now build the battery storage facility until 2018 at the site of their onshore wind farm Pen y Cymoedd in Wales. The 228 MW wind farm is currently in the commissioning phase and is expected to be completely connected to the grid by the end of the year.
Stephen Holdroyd, Senior Development Manager at Vattenfall said: “Our four year contract with National Grid means Battery@PyC will help maintain stability of power supply on the grid within milliseconds when it’s needed. Locating the storage facility at Pen y Cymoedd is a cost effective concept for us and we are excited about what we will learn from this new venture. In fact we have already learnt a huge amount from National Grid’s excellent initiative”.
