Wind Industry Profile of

Substation finished for Wikinger offshore wind farm

There are strong winds blowing in the German Baltic Sea which are soon to be harvested by another offshore wind farm: From the end of 2017 onwards, the wind farm Wikinger will supply 350,000 German households with clean energy.

Wikinger is located in the German Exclusive Economic Zone (EEZ), 75 kilometers from the mainland, near the island of Rügen, and covers an area of 34 km².

70 Adwen AD5-135 wind turbines, each with 5MW, will be placed on jacket foundations in the coming months and are to prevent 600,000 tons of CO2 annually in the future.

An important construction phase met its climax yesterday: The substation manufactured by Navantia in Cadiz, Spain, was completed and christened ‘Andalucía’. The ceremony was attended by among others, the European Commissioner for Climate Protection and Energy Miguel Arias Cañete, Iberdrola Chairman Ignacio Galán, and representatives of the German transmission system operator 50Hertz.

In August, the substation will be shipped towards the construction site. This engineering project of immense scope was designed by Iberdrola to withstand the extreme weather conditions in the region and comprises two sections, also referred to as superstructures, which will be employed by Iberdrola and 50Hertz, the electricity system operator in this region of Germany. The construction of the substation supported 700 jobs and, thanks to this initiative, Navantia has made headway into the offshore wind power industry.
