Wind Industry Profile of
Finland: German WSB Neue Energien Group sees major wind energy potential in Finland
As part of this expansion, it established a Finnish subsidiary, VSP Uusiutuva Energia Oy, in Helsinki in early 2016. Widespread consistently good wind conditions, a stable investment environment and a government which supports the expansion of renewable energies were key motivating factors for WSB Neue Energien Group to choose this location. The Finnish subsidiary VSP has already started developing two wind farms near Turku in South-West Finland, with a combined capacity of roughly 40 megawatts. It intends to enter the two projects in the first renewable energy sources tender, which is scheduled for 2018.
Christopher Small is the local Managing Director for Helsinki. The 56 year-old manager with British roots is also WSB Neue Energien Group’s Director New Markets, with responsibility for business development in Northern Europe. “We want to expand our involvement in Finland sustainably, as this country has immense potential for wind energy. We are currently assessing further projects in-depth at different development stages and expanding our network of partners,” explains Small. VSP Uusiutuva Energia works locally with experienced Finnish specialists to overcome the challenges to project feasibility and system technology presented in particular by grid expansion and the weather conditions.
