Wind Industry Profile of

Spain: Gas Natural Fenosa Renovables is company with largest share of wind power quota in Canary Islands

The multinational power company has registered 12 facilities that will produce 70 MW in Gran Canaria, Fuerteventura and Tenerife.

Gas Natural Fenosa Renovables has registered a total of 70 MW of wind power within the quota of 450 MW opened by the Ministry of Industry, Energy and Tourism for the Canary Islands to be subject to a special taxation regime. Either alone or as part of a consortium with third parties, the subsidiary of GAS NATURAL FENOSA is the company with the largest share of this quota, which was closed on 31 December.

The projects scheduled by Gas Natural Fenosa Renovables will now continue the process for obtaining all the remaining permits needed for construction in order for them to begin operating before 31 December 2018 – the deadline set by the Ministry of Industry, Energy and Tourism in the regulations governing the quota.

Gas Natural Fenosa Renovables has registered a total of 46 MW in Gran Canaria, which correspond to nine facilities (Piletas I, La Vaquería, Doramas, Triquivijate, Montaña Perros, La Sal, La Sal III, Balcón de Balos and Vientos del Roque). It has two facilities in Fuerteventura (Tablada and Moralito), totalling 18.4 MW between them. Finally, it has one facility registered in Tenerife (La Morra), with 6.3 MW.

The electricity produced by these facilities will equate to the power consumed by some 90,000 homes in the Canary Islands. Furthermore, the projects registered by Gas Natural Fenosa Renovables reflect an investment of 91.2 million euros and will create over 125 jobs during the period that the facilities are in operation. These infrastructure projects will help reduce the emission of gaseous pollutants in the Canary Islands by 2.88 tonnes and will allow a saving of 346.5 million euros in the cost of electricity production.

By developing these projects, GAS NATURAL FENOSA is reaffirming its commitment to the Canary Islands and the wind power industry in one of the autonomous regions of Spain with the largest wind power resources.

Gas Natural Fenosa Renovables

Gas Natural Fenosa Renovables currently has an operational installed capacity of 1,130 MW in Spain, of which 961 MW are accounted for by wind farms; 107 MW by mini-hydropower plants; and 62 MW by co-generation power plants.
