US: Finalization of the development of the first phase of Sterling Wind Farm

The construction of this 30 MW phase 1 could be launched from end-2016 / Sterling could have an overall capacity of 300 MW

Akuo Energy, the leading French IPP in renewable energy, announces the finalization, by its subsidiary Akuo Energy USA, of the development of the 30 MW first phase of its Sterling wind farm project. Sterling is located in Lea County and in the city Tatum, New Mexico and enjoys excellent wind conditions. Sterling wind farm, once fully developed, will have a total projected capacity of approximately 300 MW.

A 30 MW first phase ready to build

Under development since 2009 by Akuo Energy USA’s teams, Sterling has now secured all the key elements of its development for its first phase with an output of 30 MW. The wind farm will be constructed on land originally belonging to Brett Sterling, the land owner who initiated the project’s development. Currently, Akuo Energy USA is in the process of completing the remaining studies including but not limited to; environmental, noise impact, interconnection and FAA. Subject to completing the remaining development activities as well as the granting of the remaining authorizations, construction of Sterling Phase I could begin at the end of 2016, with a target commercial operation date of the fourth quarter 2017.

An exemplary project developed by an experienced player

As with all projects developed by Akuo Energy, which currently has almost 600 MW in total output around the world and close to 2 GW under development, Sterling has been designed to be an exemplary project that should generate additional societal benefits for the communities where its sites are located. In addition to producing 100% renewable energy and contributing to reducing the impact of global warming, Sterling has been designed to comply with the most stringent hygiene, security and environmental standards. Furthermore, its construction should result in the creation (directly and indirectly) of between 120 and 150 jobs during the construction phase and 2 to 3 permanent local positions, which will support the operations, and maintenance of the facility.

Thomas Coté, Chairman and CEO of Akuo Energy USA, says: “The finalization of the development of the first phase of the Sterling project, in accordance with our Group’s specifications and the definition of what makes an exemplary project, is a major milestone for our Team. Sterling has been designed with a constant focus on excellence, and we are already proud of the positive impact it will have on Lea County.”
