Ghana: Ayitepa wind farm secures grid connection with Ghana Grid Company
The agreement was signed at the Headquarters of the Ghana Grid Company Limited (GRIDCo) in Tema and is a very significant step towards preparing the project to commence construction early next year.
Set to become Ghana’s first utility-scale wind farm, the Ayitepa project could power up to 5% of the country’s electricity demand and represents a total investment of approximately USD525 million.
The connection will be secured through a new transmission substation to be constructed between the villages of Sege and Dawa in the Greater Accra Region. It is the first Connection Agreement signed in Ghana for a renewable energy project.
Commenting on the Connection Agreement, Ing. William Amuna, Chief Executive of GRIDCo, stated: “This agreement is a huge step forward for this project and GRIDCo is supporting the development and implementation of the first Ghanaian wind farm as it helps to overcome at least part of the current electricity challenge in Ghana. We hope that this project will be completed as quickly as possible because the country needs this energy, and we are convinced that this step will encourage other developers interested in renewable energy projects in Ghana.“
Commenting on the signing of the agreement, Mainstream’s Development Manager for Africa, Liam Leahy said: “The signing of the grid connection agreement represents a key milestone in the progression of the Ayitepa wind farm towards construction early next year. It is also the first renewable energy grid connection agreement in Ghana to date and will hopefully set the precedent for many more over the coming years. I would like to thank all those involved especially the representatives from GRIDCo who we have worked very closely with to make this possible.”
