GE awarded $491 mn wind turbine order for Brazil projects

Nacelle to be utilized for the 181MW Hermenegildo wind farm in southern Brazil, being built by Eletrosul using GE’s 101 1.7-100 turbines

GE has entered into a 346 MW supply deal for wind turbines worth $491 million with the Brazilian renewable-energy developer Casa dos Ventos. Besides, Casa dos Ventos has plans to sign up another deal with GE for 350 megawatts of turbines worth 1.5 billion. The Sao Clemente Park in Pernambuco state will install 216 MW of wind turbines.

The remaining 130 MW will be used for Tiangua project in Ceara state, which is expected to begin in the first half of the year. Casa dos Ventos is the biggest wind developer in Latin America having around 1 gigawatt of wind farms in various stages of development. Moreover, the company has sold 3.5 gigawatts of projects to other companies. In December 2014, GE has delivered its first nacelle assembled in Brazil under the country’s 2013 local-content regime.

The nacelle will be utilized for the 181MW Hermenegildo wind farm in southern Brazil, being built by Eletrosul using GE’s 101 1.7-100 turbines. 2 days ago, Brazil’s new energy minister Eduardo Braga announced support for offshore wind and ocean energy technologies. He vowed to continue Brazil’s federal energy auctions program that brought down the price of wind power lower than natural gas and hydroelectricity. Brazil has about 6 gigawatts of installed wind-power capacity, which is expected to grow to more than 22 gigawatts in the next decade.
