EWEA: Tacke takes Garrad's place

"I am looking forward to continuing to watch the progress of EWEA closely. The wind energy industry will continue to make unprecedented progress in Europe."

The Board of Directors of the European Wind Energy Association (EWEA) has elected Markus Tacke, CEO of Siemens Wind Power, to be its new chairman. He takes over from Andrew Garrad, who held the position for the past one and a half years.

"This is an exciting time for the wind industry and I am looking forward to the tasks ahead of us," Tacke said after being appointed. "One of the first major challenges will be to anchor the ambitious target of 30% renewable energy by 2030 in the climate and energy plans of the heads of government. This will be the springboard for the wind energy industry into the period after 2020." EWEA CEO Thomas Becker said: "We are delighted to be working with such an experienced person at this crucial time for the wind energy industry in Europe."

Tacke has been the head of Siemens Wind Power since August 2013, but he has been with the company since 1998. He was also head of the Industrial Power business unit and was responsible for Siemens' business with industrial steam turbines.

Tacke's predecessor Garrad said: "Being chairman of the EWEA was a rewarding experience. We have transformed the association in the period since I took office more than a year and a half ago. The EWEA is highly regarded in Brussels, as it is in all of Europe, and this is a testament to the strength of the organisation and our industry. "He also added: "I am looking forward to continuing to watch the progress of EWEA closely. The wind energy industry will continue to make unprecedented progress in Europe."
