TEMBRA Ingenieurgesellschaft - 25 years of international experience in wind turbine development

The founders of independent engineering company TEMBRA and some of their engineering specialists have been working in the wind power industry for over 25 years.

In doing so, they have helped professionalise the industry since its infancy. Over 6,000 wind turbines have been built worldwide based on their developments, turning pioneers into serious market stakeholders. The fact that wind energy plays an increasingly important role in many countries today is partly due to the commitment of small and medium-sized enterprises like TEMBRA.

With its extensive international experience, TEMBRA can quickly assess its customers’ needs and capacities. Besides technical criteria, cultural aspects in particular play a significant role for any successful cooperation.

Before a turbine concept is developed in cooperation, the target market must be analysed, taking both the environmental conditions and the customer’s technical capabilities into consideration. Our goal is to enable the customer to build a reliable and economically viable wind turbine sustainably. This is achieved by close cooperation and employee training, especially in emerging countries. International knowledge sharing is an important aspect of TEMBRA’s services, building valuable capacity for customers.

TEMBRA works with an established network of suppliers and certified experts. On the other hand, regional conditions always play an important role in the selection of components and suppliers. Here Increasingly also the legal framework has to be taken into account, including local content requirements that are intended to promote value creation in the given country’s domestic economy.

Further the subsequent transportation of components to locations, some of which are remote, need to be considered as early as the concept phase. Components such as the tower and the rotor blades are not only large, they also account for almost half of the turbine’s costs. In countries with low labour costs, lattice towers can be attractive because they are assembled on-site using individual profiles.

The azimuth system developed by TEMBRA exemplifies how a sensitive design can benefit local suppliers such as foundries. Instead of an integrated rolling bearing, TEMBRA provides a modular sliding bearing. This allows the manufacturer to purchase and assemble the bearing components locally. If maintenance is required, bearing components can be replaced on the turbine itself without dismantling the nacelle. This is a key advantage especially in countries with insufficient crane capacities, or in remote locations.
