ACSA AND NEC SIGN ORDER FOR PRIVATELY FINANCED HYBRID WIND ENERGY PROJECT IN SOMALIA (WIND, DIESEL, PV)

Establishes ACSA’s market entry in Africa.

After a stringent tender and qualification process, ACSA has received its first order from Africa. It is for the delivery, installation and maintenance of two A27-225kW wind turbine units for Nugaal Electric Company (NEC), a privately owned utility in Somalia. These units will be installed in 2014 as part of a hybrid wind-diesel-PV project for the electricity supply of Garowe City. The A27-225kW wind turbine of Aerogeneradores Canarios S.A. (ACSA) is a licensed version of the tried and tested Vestas V27, which ACSA has manufactured and further improved since 1991.

The Garowe City project was launched in 2010 and is the first of its kind in Somalia. Being 100% privately financed, it is unique of its kind in Africa. This landmark project will constitute a model for medium scale green energy power systems in the whole region.

The Garowe City project is funded by the local utility NEC. The A27 wind turbines will be installed as a hybrid system to cut diesel fuel costs as much as possible, by means of optimizing output from wind energy and PV. A support program for the local engineers is in place. Design of the combined wind energy and PV project and selection of the wind turbine type, took place under most stringent quality requirements. The selection and tender process was supported by an established European wind energy consultancy.

The order and delivery is next to multiple ACSA deliveries to other area’s like the UK, Spain, Italy, Russia, and to the Far East. It also firmly confirms that ACSA’s supply chain and assembly line is sustainable for the future. ACSA produces, installs and maintains these units since 1991.

For single wind turbine projects and small wind farms, robustness and reliability are the critical success factor. ACSA has an unbeaten track record for its products, service & maintenance: more than 98% availability after 21 years of operation under the harshest conditions (yearly average wind speed of up to 10m/s, salty, dusty and gusty wind environment). During those years ACSA managed a continuous improvement program, resulting in a product that today is even better than the original V27 version. Only European component suppliers are used. And because ACSA sticks to the original design, ACSA is the only V27-license holder who will provide a compliancy statement with the original Det Norske Veritas type certificate for the V27.
