China - Energy from wind and solar resources for Shanghai?
Facing the "energy bottleneck", Shanghai has carried out preliminary investigations regarding the atmospheric renewable energy resources in an attempt to optimize the city's energy structures. As was reported by the Shanghai Weather Bureau, a detailed report on Shanghai's wind energy resources has basically been finalized. The report shows that the coastal regions of Shanghai are rich in wind energy and suitable for generating electricity via wind. Developing wind power in most areas of Shanghai is not that practical, especially due to the influence of city planning and dense buildings. So, relevant departments have turned their attention to developing wind power in coastal regions and at sea. Shanghai is also rich in solar energy resources. Statistics show that the annual duration of sunshine in Shanghai amounted to 1,930 hours in 2004. This indicators amounts to 2, 318 hours in the Chongming Island. Experts therefore propose to introduce advanced sunlight application systems into city construction, development of the Chongming Island and design of residential communities.
