Speciality Sector and its players- Introducing the Gaia-Wind 133-11kW wind turbine

Gaia-Wind small wind turbine is specifically designed to maximise energy production in areas having low to moderate annual wind speeds of between 10-17mph.

The Gaia-Wind 133-11kW small wind turbine produces an energy yield ideally suited to farms, large residences, offices, small businesses and public buildings – helping you reduce your energy costs and carbon footprint.

Able to perform in wind speeds between 3.5 m/s - 25 m/s, the Gaia-Wind 133/11kW turbine is designed to ideally operate in moderate annual wind speeds of between 4.5 m/s - 7.5 m/s. Gaia's wind turbine produces an energy yield ideally suited to farms, rural residences and business – reducing both energy costs and carbon footprint.

The Gaia-Wind 133-11kW small wind turbine has achieved both Microgeneration Certification Scheme (MCS) installer and product accreditation in the UK, making it eligible for the UK Feed-In tariff scheme.

Problems with your wind turbine project?
It is possible to make an amendment without a resubmission, both during the application process and up to 12 months after planning permission has been granted. If you wished to switch your planning to a Gaia-Wind turbine, we can carry out the planning amendment on your behalf.

Find out more about our turbine:
A) Productivity:
The Gaia-Wind 133-11kW turbine is the most productive small wind turbine in the 10-20kW range. On a site with an average wind speed of 6m/s at hub height, a Gaia-Wind 133-11kW outperforms its nearest competitors by up to 50%. The table below outlines an energy comparison of wind turbines in the 10-20kW range currently eligible for the UK Feed-In tariff.

B)Inspirational small wind turbine design:
The Gaia-Wind 133-11kW turbine is UK MCS approved, has been rigorously tested in the USA, and has had Danish HBO certification for several years.

Key design features:
• Oversized rotor – our small wind turbine’s oversized rotor allows it to capture significantly more energy than similarly rated machines. Greater renewable energy production increases return on investment, generating better value for you
• Triple safety system – with three levels of braking mechanisms the Gaia-Wind small wind turbine is one of the safest small wind turbines manufactured. The comprehensive safety system protects the turbine by automatically ‘parking’ the turbine when wind speeds reach 56mph or above ensuring the blade never overspeeds
• Modular components – we use high quality off-the-shelf (rather than bespoke) components so customers are always assured of the long-term availability of spare parts. As the blade truns steadily, wear-and-tear is reduced, diminishing service and repair costs over time
• Noise output – our turbine is designed to rotate at a steady, constant speed which ensures that it runs quietly
• Aesthetics – to us ‘environment’ means more than just clean renewable energy. The aesthetically pleasing design of our small wind turbine with its reflection-free light grey blades match the sky and the clouds allowing it to stand comfortably and blend into the surrounding countryside

C) Safety features similar to large utility-scale wind farm turbines.

C1) Reliability
Benefiting from over 20 years of Danish wind turbine design experience, the Gaia-Wind 133-11kW turbine has undergone extensive international quality and safety testing. It is UK Microgeneration Certfication Scheme (MCS) approved, has been rigorously tested in the USA, and has had Danish HBO certification for several years.

Gaia-Wind is the only small wind turbine manufacturer to have achieved the Danish HB Standards, which certify compliance with rigorous quality, safety and performance requirements.
• More than 500 of our turbines have been “in the ground” for a combined operational time of more than 1500 years
• In Denmark, 77 of our Gaia-Wind turbines have been running for more than 10 years
• An exclusive feature of a Gaia-Wind small wind turbine is the innovative control system developed from the controllers used on industrial size large wind turbines. The system contains multiple sensors which continuously monitor the status and performance of the turbine

C2) Safety
Our horizontal wind turbine is protected against very high wind speeds by three levels of safety features including:
1. Passive stall control
2. Mechanical brake activation
3. Deployment of centrifugally activated tip brakes

All of these measures ensure that should the wind reach speeds over 56mph, the rotor will automatically ‘park’ itself to avoid damage to your turbine.

D) The Gaia-Wind 133-11kW turbine makes significantly less noise than other similar sized small wind turbines.

Understanding turbine noise output - The main source of noise from a wind turbine is caused by the blade tips cutting through the air.

Our turbine is expertly designed to rotate at a steady and constant speed ensuring that noise levels remain low across its operational range. A quiet turbine offers a greater range of planning options when deciding on its site position.

E) Certification
The Gaia-Wind small wind turbine has achieved both product and installer accreditation to the Microgeneration Certification Scheme (MCS) in the UK. The company’s installer certification number is MCS 1408 and the product certification number is TUV0002.

The Gaia-Wind small wind turbine is the only small wind turbine in the world to have achieved the Danish HB certification standards, complying with rigorous quality, safety and performance requirements.

F) Case Study - Farm in Ayrshire, Scotland -November 21, 2011
This Ayrshire farm is a busy livery yard and stud which has produced 120,000kWh of electricity in its first three years. the site has electricity requirements for lighting and equipment such as a horse walker. The main farm house and a self-catering cottage also operate an electrical heating system.

Key objective: To reduce energy bills

Background: the owner of this farm wanted to reduce his energy bills by generating electricity from a renewable source. After substantial research into the various options available, the Gaia-Wind 133-11kW turbine was chosen based on its power production and performance in moderate wind speeds.

Site conditions : The turbine is sited in open fields about 70m NNE of the main farm buildings, on a gentle south-east slope. Apart from the farm buildings themselves there is little to obstruct wind flow in the turbine vicinity: This site has good moderate winds with an estimated annual average wind speed of 6.6m/sat turbine height of 18m.

Turbine Performance: Commissioned in 2008 the turbine has produced 120,000kWh of green electricity in its first 3 years of operation giving a daily average production of 98kWh and offsetting 20 tonnes of CO2 production annually. About half of the electricity generated is used onsite resulting in a significant reduction in energy bills, and the remainder is sold to the grid.
"…production figures are consistent with predictions but far exceed the estimates of the local energy consultants who are amazed by its overall production. Visitors are impressed that it is so quiet and that it is productive even in reasonably light winds…". Turbine owner
