Pakistan - 35 Environmental Projects Worth Rs. 3.6b Approved
As many as 35 environmental projects worth Rs. 3.6 billion were approved in the 3rd meeting of the Steering Committee of the National Environmental Action Plan-Support Programme (NEAP-SP). The meeting was held here on Saturday under the Chairmanship of the Secretary, Ministry of Environment, Javed Hassan Aly.
The approved projects included, establishment of the national environmental information management system, introduction of environmental accounting in the national accounting system, integration of environment in the teacher training programs of AIOU, establishment of cleaner production centers, clean drinking water initiative, conservation of fish biodiversity in River Swat, national renewable energy technologies project, environmental awareness in Balochistan and rehabilitation of Hannah Lake catchment area and several others focusing on core areas of the NEAP to address the poverty environment nexus.
The Ministry of Environment is implementing the National Environmental Action Plan-Support Programme (NEAP-SP) with the help of UNDP to support NEAP, which is the national sustainable development agenda. The development objective of NEAP-SP, which is to be implemented over a span of five years, is environmental sustainability and poverty reduction in the context of economic growth.
The committee was informed that the Government and international donors have respectively contributed US$ 5.0 million and US$ 1.0 million for implementation of various project under NEAP-SP in the areas of clean drinking water, environmental education, capacity development, and decertification. The Committee was further informed that negotiations are at an advance stage with donors for contribution of another US$ 2.5 million.
The Programme proposes a wide range of technical, institutional, regulatory, social and economic interventions grouped under six major sub-programmes included policy coordination and environmental governance, pollution control, ecosystems management and natural resources conservation, energy conservation and renewable, dryland management and water conservation and support for grass roots initiatives.
