China - AMSC helps China’s Sinovel meet turbine demand

American Superconductor Corp. (AMSC) said it has amended its contract with Beijing-based wind turbine producer Sinovel Wind Corp., Ltd., to increase and accelerate AMSC’s electrical-component shipments so that Sinovel can meet increased demand in China for its 1.5-MW wind turbines.

The original contract called for AMSC to ship core electrical components for Sinovel’s 1.5-MW wind turbines beginning last January and going through the end of December 2011. Under the terms of the amended contract, AMSC will increase its core electrical component shipments to Sinovel in calendar year 2009 and 2010 and will complete all shipments by the end of April 2011. The contract was also amended to include a greater number of AMSC’s wind-specific PowerModule PM3000W power converters.

China puts price on wind:
Tweaking its system as the country accelerates its deployment of the renewable resource, China set benchmark prices for wind power based on four regions divided according to wind resource and project construction conditions. Standard prices for wind power will be established for the regions at prices ranging from 0.51-0.61 yuan per kWh. Publicly announcing standard electricity prices will allow investors to have clear expectations of their investment, encourage the development of high quality resources, restrict the exploitation of low quality resources, and guarantee the orderly development of wind power, the government-run People’s Daily Online reported.
