Hydraulic brake control increases service life of wind power plants

The hydraulic actuation of azimuth and rotor brakes in wind power plants increases the service life of costly components such as gearboxes, rotor blades, tower and foundations. Munich-based HAWE Hydraulik offers compact pump aggregates especially suitable for the brake function.

These consist of a tank with an integrated submerged motor, a radial piston or gear pump that is directly attached to the motor shaft - without any coupling - and a connection block. The function modules are mounted directly on to the connection block. In the event of a fault or disruption the module causing the interference can be easily identified and exchanged by simply loosening four screws. There is no need to remove any hoses connected to the consumers.

All components exposed to pressure loads are made of steel and are therefore capable of withstanding extremely high pressure loads, which in turn significantly extends the life cycle and load capacity of the aggregates. The radial piston pumps enables can supply pressurized oil with up to 700 bar, while the valves are designed for pressures in excess of 400 bar. As the pressure level of wind power plants is below 250 bar, the valves used in these installations are extremely long-living. The aggregate's compact construction allows them to be transported without a crane.

For safety reasons the brakes of a wind power plant must work reliable at any time. HAWE Hydraulik therefore uses oil-leak-proof directional seated valves. These offer considerably higher switching reliability than the directional sliding valves as dirt particles are flushed out again when the valve is opened. This way the play of the slide valve piston in its guide bushing cannot clog and thereby trigger the valve to be choked. In case of voltage failure the hand pump is used for emergency operation of the brakes.

The compact pump aggregate of the type KA, is the latest model in HAWE Hydraulik's product family. It has been designed for batch and cut-out
