Washington, DC – Today, the Biden administration’s Department of the Interior released a new five-year offshore wind leasing schedule, laying out a plan for 12 offshore wind auctions in federal waters between now and 2028.

Interior also recently finalized a new rule to modernize offshore renewable energy development, which is projected to save the industry roughly $1.9 billion over the next 20 years, accelerating the deployment of sustainable energy projects that will bolster the economy and the environment.

The Biden administration and Department of Energy also released today a new Offshore Wind Liftoff Report, highlighting the sector's progress and potential for creating jobs and expanding clean energy access, as well as announcing a $48 million investment in research and development to support offshore wind.

In response, Sierra Club Deputy Legislative Director Xavier Boatright released the following statement:

“We commend the Biden administration for their actions to enhance America's offshore wind capacity and take a critical step toward a clean energy future. Secretary Haaland's announcement highlights the administration's dedication to innovation and sustainability, ensuring that as the industry evolves, regulations will adapt to facilitate safe and efficient growth, support job creation, and power millions of homes with renewable energy. We are enthusiastic about these developments and remain dedicated to collaborating with the Biden administration and all stakeholders to maximize the potential of offshore wind, which is crucial for enhancing energy security and meeting our climate goals.”
