RWE selects suppliers for Denmark's largest offshore wind farm Thor

RWE has announced that all major components for the 1,000 MW Thor offshore wind farm in Denmark have been secured. The company is signing agreements with suppliers for turbines, foundations, cables and the on- and offshore substation.

RWE's decision are made: All key suppliers for Denmark's largest offshore wind farm to date, Thor, are finalized and corresponding agreements signed. Thor will be built with a planned capacity of more than 1,000 megawatts in the Danish North Sea, about 22 kilometers from Thorsminde on the west coast of Jutland. When fully commissioned, scheduled for no later than the end of 2027, Thor is expected to produce enough green electricity to supply more than one million Danish households.

Sven Utermöhlen, CEO RWE Offshore Wind: "With Thor, we will make an important contribution to Denmark's ambitious climate targets. In realizing this project, we will rely on our more than 20 years of experience in offshore wind energy and on experienced suppliers. Based on a comprehensive process, we have selected the preferred suppliers and secured the required production windows for the main components. This is an important step towards the implementation of this major project - especially in light of the current market situation."

Half of the monopile foundations will be manufactured by German company EEW SPC, while the other 36 foundations and secondary structures will be supplied by Dajin Offshore. The foundations, up to 100 meters long, will weigh about 1,500 tons. Danish-British engineering firm Wood Thilsted is responsible for the design of the foundations. Jan De Nul Group will provide the installation vessel. Work at sea is expected to take place in 2025.

Siemens Gamesa will supply 72 of their SG 14-236 DD offshore turbines. Half of these turbines will be equipped with towers made of lower-carbon steel, the 'Greener Tower,' Siemens announced. RWE is the world's first project developer to use these towers.

Fred.Olsen Windcarrier will provide the vessel for the installation of the turbines, which is scheduled to take place from the Danish port of Esbjerg starting in 2026. Both RWE and Siemens Gamesa intend to work with skilled local labor during the construction and commissioning of the project, both in port and offshore.

A joint venture of Hellenic Cables and Jan De Nul Group has been selected for the cabling of the turbines and for land connection. Installation as well as commissioning of the cable system is expected in 2025. In addition, the joint venture will install the cables from the landfall onshore to the onshore substation being built by Siemens Energy in the Lemvig municipality. Siemens Energy will carry out the construction work together with MT Højgaard Danmark, one of Denmark's leading companies for large-scale construction and infrastructure projects. Work on the onshore substation is expected to start in the coming weeks.

HSM Offshore Energy has been selected to design, build, install and commission the offshore substation and associated jacket foundation. Installation is expected to take place in 2025, followed by commissioning and testing of the offshore substation the following year.
