First prototype of the LM 54.0 rotorblade has been delivered to Risø test station at Høvsøre, Denmark.

Large rotorblade intended for the the next generation of multi-MW turbines for the offshore market

LM Glasfiber has delivered the first prototype set of the LM 54.0 P blade to the Risø test station at Høvsøre, Denmark. The prototype set has been mounted on NEG Micon's 4.2 MW test turbine. The blade design is based on the Future Blade technology that LM Glasfiber has worked on for four years, and which targets the manufacture of the very large blades of the future for the next generation of multi-MW turbines for the offshore market. In the development of the Future Blade technology, all the many factors from materials and design to processes, tools and production conditions have been assessed.

Despite its length, the LM 54.0 P blade weighs only 13.5 tonnes. This is less than half the weight of some competing blades. Maximum operational safety is a direct requirement for offshore wind turbines. The LM 54.0 P is therefore equipped with a multi-receptor system consisting of a series of receptors mounted on both sides of the blade. Together with the receptor at the tip of the blade, these conduct the energy of any lightning strike and thus prevent damage from occurring. With the 54-metre length of this design, LM Glasfiber raises modern blade technology to another level and creates an important new opportunity for efficient, competitive utilisation of wind energy.
