Spanish comapny Ingeteam participated in the 2021 edition of BIND 4.0, organised by SPRI and the Basque Government. The programme allows large Basque companies to meet and collaborate with small technology start-ups from around the world on new R&D&I developments.

In this case, Ingeteam chose Jungle AI, a start-up specialised in artificial intelligence (AI) based in Portugal and the Netherlands, to develop a web platform that analyses SCADA data from multiple sensors from a wind farm. The data have been collected over the last three years and include temperatures, speeds, power and other physical variables of interest to a wind generator.

The project consists of creating machine learning models for the operation of a turbine and comparing them to the data collected from the sensors over a year. From there, the artificial intelligence learns by comparing the model and reality using machine learning techniques. By using neural networks trained with the data provided, the platform is able to detect anomalies in the different components of the turbines, such as generators, transformers or gearboxes. The platform also detected some serious faults that led to the rupture of several components. Had these algorithms been applied in real time, some unscheduled shutdowns of the wind farm could have been avoided.

This platform can be used by an O&M operator as a tool for predictive maintenance and help to avoid repair costs.

INGETEAM is a provider of Smart SCADA solutions for the management of renewable energy assets (wind, photovoltaic, storage and hydro). Ingeteam's SCADA platform enables comprehensive asset management, from real-time monitoring to analytics, business intelligence, automated reporting and integrated O&M management.

Although the collaboration on the BIND 4.0 project is now formally closed, Ingeteam and Jungle continue to work together to improve the results achieved and apply them to other potential areas of interest, such as photovoltaics.

Ingeteam R&D Europe's Digital Transformation department has been applying artificial intelligence and machine learning to its computer models for two years to continuously improve and obtain valid forecasts for the products and services offered by the business units, such as photovoltaics, traction, electric chargers, etc.
