Kenya: Kipeto Wind Farm finishes installation
Kipeto Energy PLC (KEP) is a special purpose vehicle incorporated in Kenya for the development of the Kipeto Wind Power Project. No incidents have been reported during construction. "This is a great milestone and we are very proud of the entire Kipeto Energy PLC team, all our Shareholders and all Stakeholders who have worked tirelessly towards the achievement of this great milestone despite the current Covid-19 pandemic", the company said in a statement.
The project has a 20 year Power Purchase Agreement signed with Kenya Power and Lighting Company in July 2016 .
The turbines were provided by General Electric who will also handle operations and maintenance services for the project once operational. China Machinery Engineering Corporation (CMEC) will be providing engineering, procurement and construction (EPC) services. The EPC contract was signed with CMEC in March 2018, and the contractor began construction works in Q3 2018.
With a generation capacity of 100MW of clean, renewable electrical energy, the project is the second largest wind power project in Kenya. It is situated in Esilanke area, Kiserian Division, Kajiado County, South West of Nairobi covering an area of approximately 70km2.
The Kipeto Wind Power project will play a crucial role in enabling Kenya to achieve its Vision 2030 objectives. KEP is responsible for the overall financing, construction and operation of the Kipeto Wind Power Project.
