Equinor Celebrates US Success with Norconsult's Support
Equinor was recently contracted to build the largest offshore wind farm in the US. The company was assisted by Norconsult's Kjeller Vindteknikk. Kjeller Vindteknikk is Northern Europe's leading player in measuring and analysing wind and other climate effects such as precipitation and icing, and has offices in Norway, Finland, Sweden and Iceland. The company became part of Norconsult in 2019.
The project, one of the largest renewable energy deployment initiatives in the US, includes two wind farms, Empire Wind and Beacon Wind, which together cover more than 840 square miles off the coast of New York State. When completed, they will produce 3.3 gigawatts of clean electricity for around one million US households.
Norconsult has supported both projects with meteorological simulations, power generation estimates and wake loss calculations, i.e. calculations of turbulence that occurs at the trailing edge of a wind turbine and reduces production for affected turbines. In addition, the company has contributed to the validation of measurements on the Empire Wind project.
"This is a huge project and we are very exciting to be a part of it. Equinor selecting Norconsult for such a prestigious project is a solid endorsement of our expertise and something we are very proud of. This shows that even a player from small Norway can compete in the global market for offshore wind," says Lars Tallhaug, Head of Kjeller Wind Engineering at Norconsult.
