Green Lights for Kaskasi Offshore Wind Farm

innogy will build its third offshore wind farm in Germany in the North Sea 35 kilometres north of the island of Heligoland. This was announced by the company. The contracts for the supply of all important components have already been signed. The order value for wind turbines and foundations, the offshore transformer station and the cabling for the wind farm is over EUR 500 million in total. The wind farm will supply electricity for 400,000 households.

Christoph Radke, COO Renewables at innogy SE, explains: “Offshore wind is an important pillar to reach Germany’s climate protection goals by supplying green electricity from a reliable source. I am delighted to announce that we have paved the way for the construction of our Kaskasi offshore wind project, which will become our third offshore wind farm off the German coast. Our investment in this project underlines our ambitions to further grow in offshore wind in Europe and around the globe.“

Sven Utermöhlen, Senior Vice President Renewables Operations Offshore at innogy SE, adds: “Following our success in the German offshore auction in 2018, we have now taken the next important step in realising Kaskasi offshore wind farm. With Siemens Gamesa, Bladt Industries and Seaway 7 we have brought extremely experienced contractors and suppliers on board for all key components and their installation, which is expected to start next year.”

Siemens Gamesa will supply 38 SG 8.0-167 DD Flex offshore wind turbines with an installed capacity of up to 9 MW. The rotor diameter is 167 meters and the total height is 191 meters. The wind turbines and the transformer station will be erected on monopile foundations from Bladt Industries. Seaway 7 will begin installing the foundations in moderate water depths of 18 to 25 meters in the third quarter of 2021 using an innovative process. The vibro pile driving technique is an efficient alternative to the conventional impact pile driving technique.

The substation is also manufactured by Bladt Industries, the required cables are laid by Seaway 7. The wind farm is to be connected to the grid in the summer of 2022. The existing innogy service station on Heligoland will be used for maintenance and operation.
