Wind Industry Profile of
Netherlands: Capacity of 10 GW untapped in the area of the Dutch Wadden Sea Islands
The province of Groningen in the Netherlands wants to contribute their part to a clean energy supply of the future. Therefore, the results of a new research report, prepared by BLIX, were handed over today to the government's minister of economic affairs.
According to this, a great potential for offshore wind farms of up to 10 gigawatts is possible off the coast of the Dutch Wadden Sea. This is 15 times the power currently available from the Gemini Wind Farm, one of the largest in the world.
In addition to a CO2-free energy supply, the wind farms would provide jobs in the region and throughout the country. The report also refers to a decision by the US Internet giant Google to build a data center in Eemshaven, as there is enough renewable energy available. The infrastructure of the northern Netherlands would also be boosted by the construction of further offshore wind farms, which is why the provinces of Drenthe and Fryslân join the demand to facilitate construction in the relevant areas.
